Why PE at Flynn?

When Glowworms first began, the founders met with Nancy Sarraga, the principal at Flynn, to find out where help was needed most. Principal Sarraga replied that the school lacked a structured physical education program and, without it, the children were missing out on opportunities to build self-esteem and social skills as well as physical fitness.

Children who develop the habit early of being physically active are likely to remain active into adulthood, and thus are more likely to avoid such health risks as heart disease and obesity-related problems. Participation in physical activity also leads to improved body image, as well as contributing positively to physical health and well-being. With childhood obesity and diabetes rates soaring, the need for physical education in our schools cannot be overlooked.

About three-quarters of children from economically disadvantaged families, such as many of those in the Mission District, rarely participate in organized sports, compared with one-quarter of higher-income children. In light of demonstrated links between participation in athletics and lower rates of drug use, gang activity, and other pitfalls that threaten children in our neighborhoods, the need for physical education becomes even more compelling.

As Principal Sarraga explains, the benefits of PE extend to academics as well. A child who excels on the playing field is often able to use that self-confidence to tackle other subjects in the classroom. The social skills that come from playing together as a team form the building blocks for children to learn to work together in other areas.
