Students who are defiant, disruptive and disrespectful exist in every secondary (and even primary) school. In most schools, the usual responses to students with such behaviors are parent meetings, after-school or lunchtime detentions, suspensions, and, for those with severe behavioral problems, expulsion. Some schools provide one-to-one counseling, often by interns. While a few schools might offer group counseling, they are rarely sustained due to staffing and scheduling barriers. Also, these groups tend to follow a discussion format but rarely rely on any formalized "curriculum" or prescribed set of discussion points. Rarely, if ever, are they evaluated for effectiveness.
