At Gloria R. Davis College Preparatory Academy (GRD), Glowworms is funding the Interactive Journaling Project, a twice-a-week pilot program for students with challenging, self-harmful behaviors. The program is designed to help students work through issues in their lives and focus their energy in productive directions. The sessions foster student accountability and self-reflection and encourage students to take responsibility for their behavior and actions. The project's objective is to create a group environment in which challenging students can learn to control their behavior and contribute productively in the classroom.
Students are carefully selected by teachers and administrators, with parent involvement. The students have exhibited disruptive and challenging behavior and the project is founded on the belief that these traits are manifestations of misdirected potential. Through focused, research-based group sessions, these students can begin to cultivate skills that can help them succeed in school. The group is led by a Youth Group Facilitator, Shakeel Ali, who has extensive experience in the community and the values to work productively with these students. Each group is composed of 6 students, and meets for 45 minute sessions, twice a week, during school hours Glowworms is also funding a professional evaluator to assess the project's impact on the students and the school. The evaluation will help shape future strategies for working with these groups of students and for seeking funding support If you would like to contribute to The Glowworms Education Foundation's fund for Interactive journaling at Gloria R. Davis, please see the information in our donating section. |
